Lingerie Wars by Janet Elizabeth Henderson

17729315Blurb: Englishman Lake Benson loaned his life savings to his dippy sister so that she could buy a shop. It was a big mistake. His sister has been steadily flushing his money down the drain – and now he wants it back. Years in the special forces taught Lake that if you want a job done, do it yourself. So he steps in to make the shop profitable, sell it and get his money back. The only problem is, the business is an underwear shop. And all Lake knows about underwear can be summed up in how fast he can unsnap a bra. To make matters worse, the tiny highland town already has a lingerie shop. A successful one, run by an ex-lingerie model. A very gorgeous ex-lingerie model, who’s distracting him from his mission more than he’d like to admit. If Lake wants to get his savings back, and get out of Scotland, he only has one option – wipe out the competition.

Kirsty Campbell has spent years rebuilding her life after she woke up in hospital in Spain to find her body scarred, and her ex-fiance had run off with all her money. The last thing she needs is a cocky, English soldier-boy trying to ruin all she has left. Her home town is only too happy to help her fight the latest English invasion, although Lake is beginning to sway them with his sex appeal and cut price knickers. With the help of her mother, and the retired ladies of Knit or Die, Kirsty sets about making sure that her shop is the last one standing in Invertary.

It’s Scotland versus England as you’ve never seen it before. It’s lingerie war.

Seriously I now want to be best friends with Janet Henderson for two reasons. The first is that she is an amazing author and I absolutely loved this story. Second is because she cares about her readers. About 10% into this book I was getting frustrated by what I now know where formatting errors due to a corrupted file and I posted a status to that effect on my Goodreads. Within 30 minutes I had received a comment on my status as well as a message telling me of the error and helping me get a clean file. I was seriously impressed! That right there is the best costumer service. Now I need to be friends with someone as wonderful as that.
I gained access to this fabulous book through NetGalley and thought it sounded like a cute read. Ex-army buys a lingerie shop to help his sister and then has to make it profitable. The trouble is there is an ex-lingerie model running a similar shop across the street. And the war ensues! Cute right! It is so much more than that. At first I was a little confused by the narrator but that could have been partly due to the format of my corrupt file. In the clean file there are large paragraph breaks to signal changing between characters. I have been so used to reading first person narration it took me a couple of pages to realize this book is written in third person. The joy of that was that you get all aspects of the story without the shifting POV that some people do not like. I enjoyed it because it would have been too confusing to have first person in this story or you would not have had all the characters included.
This book is about Lake Benson, my heart melts just thinking about this character now, he is the new owner of the underwear shop that his sister Rainne, a hippie, bought from a crazy old lady, Betty, who I love. And now Lake is in a war with a lingerie model’s, Kirsty, lingerie shop. And the craziness begins, there is sabotage, burglary, and a whole lot of hilarious sexual tension between Lake and Kirsty. Lines have been drawn and the town must choose which shop is the best and even the “innocent” citizens of Invertary get involved in the underhanded tactics. Lake is never cruel in his war games and he really is just trying to get Kirsty to fight for her shop. The way he antagonizes her is cute and they have a good deal of chemistry. I loved their banter, it made this book! The old lady Betty just adds drama into this mix and causes trouble but she is a good laugh with the way she speaks to Lake. Rainne isn’t such a big player in this book and I was kind of glad because I wasn’t that big of a fan of hers. She was whiny and indecisive, exactly what the author wanted her to be but I don’t have soft spots for those characters so she was just annoying to me. The knit or die group was great and I truly liked that Kirsty’s mom and her group of biddies always had her back. There is so much to this story that I don’t really want to share in my review because I want you to read it and experience it for yourself.
I also love to read books with foreign (to me) characters because you learn the greatest expressions like ” you’re cheesing me off”. That had to be one of my favorite parts. Aww, who am I kidding I have so many favorite parts I just can’t list them all. But after you’ve read this book we can share and then wait for book 2!
